This month’s special feature:

HIKE: Native Grasses of the Mojave Desert with naturalist Laura Cunningham

Learn about the Mojave Desert’s native grasses with renowned naturalist Laura Cunningham! Having her in the area is a very special treat, so we hope you can join us. Laura is an artist-naturalist who wrote and illustrated the ecological history book A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California, emphasizing native California grasslands, oak woodlands, shrublands, and forests once filled with salmon, antelope, elk, wolves, and grizzlies thriving for thousands of years before European Contact. She has a particular interest in native grasses.

Laura will be leading the hike along the Castle Mountains Grasslands Trail, a prime area for viewing and appreciating the Mojave Desert’s rare native grasses.

We’ll start things off with a tour of the ranch house at 9AM and then caravan over to the trail head for the hike around 10AM. You can come just for the tour, or just for the hike, but please RSVP so we know how many people to expect.
