First Saturdays at Walking Box Ranch

Help us preserve and maintain Walking Box Ranch on the first Saturday of every month.

If you enjoy gardening this is a great volunteer opportunity. We're organizing volunteer teams to engage in some simple groundskeeping from 9am until around 12pm noon. You'll be using basic gardening tools and your own gloved hands to pull weeds around the ranch house. If you're into getting a little dirtier there are a number of weeds, shrubs, and other plants in the corral area needing removal that may require use of loppers, saws, and other tools.

At 9am we'll gather for volunteer sign-in plus an activity overview and safety briefing. Volunteers will break out into teams and take care of business for 2 hours. Come in sturdy, closed-toed shoes, clothing that protects you from the sun and potentially pointy plant life, and bring a water bottle. We'll bring gloves and other protective gear, tools, spare water, and snacks. At the end of the activity join us for a casual tour of the ranch house and grounds.

9:00 - Check in and briefing
9:30 - Groundskeeping activities
11:30 - Tool turn in and ranch house tour

Friends of Avi Kwa Ame is partnering with Equinox Gold (Castle Mountain Mine) and the Bureau of Land Management (Las Vegas Field Office) to hold an annual cactus and plant donation event on December 2nd, at Walking Box Ranch.

Species include barrel cactus, cholla, beavertail, prickly pear, and hedgehog cactus.

Supplies are limited and while we limit 5 plants per person, it is first come first serve. We might have select (eastern) Joshua Tree saplings available to the first few dozens folks, from the first batch of Joshua Trees grown at the mine’s revegetation greenhouse.

National Public Lands Day

We will gather to clean up, remove non-native weeds, and conduct minor maintenance to landscaping at the historic Walking Box Ranch, near Searchlight, Nevada, newly designated Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. The historic property lies in the Piute Valley, and served as the ranch and home to two popular Hollywood stars in the 1930s. Acquired by the Bureau of Land Management in 2005, the property serves as a prime example of Spanish Colonial Revival style ranch houses. With this project, the BLM strives to help maintain the landscaping that is so much a part of the the site. The Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and Friends of Avi Kwa Ame invite you to participate in helping to clean and improve the site for the enjoyment of all Americans.
