CELEBRATING THE DARK SKIES of AVI KWA AME NATIONAL MONUMENT
This year, we’re celebrating National Public Lands Day with an event all about stargazing and our beautiful dark night skies!
Join us on Saturday, September 20th at the Searchlight Senior Center for a special dark sky presentation, followed by a telescope viewing and a chance to participate in our citizen science project to measure darkness levels around the monument (part of the pathway for Avi Kwa Ame National Monument to become a designated Dark Sky Park).
6:30PM PRESENTATION: PLANTS, ANIMALS & DARK SKIES
Enjoy free dessert and drinks and join Kim Garrison Means as she discusses how dark night skies affect plants, animals, and us. Kim will also give an overview of our goal of becoming an International Dark Sky Park. Come learn why dark skies matter so much, how we can protect Avi Kwa Ame's, and how you can get involved in our Dark Night Skies Project.
8:00PM - GUIDED TELESCOPE VIEWING
We’ll be heading over to the Searchlight shooting range with Francisco Silva of the Las Vegas Astronomical Society for a guided telescope viewing and astronomy chat. Bring a chair if you want to relax under the stars!
9:00PM - LIGHT MONITORING IN TEAMS
Those interested can join teams that will be monitoring light levels in different places within the monument.
